Trekking on Biokovo
The surface of the nature park Biokovo is 19.550 ha. It surrounds the coastal region of the unique natural features, about 50 km long from Brela to Gradac. High and impressive peaks (about 1500m), and steep and craggy cliffs are hardly 2 or 3 km far from coastal line.
The wavy plateau with numerous smaller depressions in the rocky soil make the Biokovo top area. These depressions are arise by the vertically of the water through the carbonated stones that build up the mountain. Such building material and the water circulation are the reasons that there are many caves, holes and abysses. For the countryside of the top area open rocky ground, beech forests in the sheltered depressions, especially inlands are characteristic. The forests of the black Dalmatian pine trees at the coastal side and the remains of the more spacious fir tree forests in the region beyond the mountains are considered especially valuable.
PROGRAM:
1. DAY Arrival in Makarska, accommodation in rooms, introducing our guide to the group, receiving all relevant information about the program. Overnight stay.
2. DAY Transfer to Goring Brela. Proceeding on foot through Bukovac, Topola, Sv.llija (164m) to the mountain cottage "Osičine" (1353 m). Rest. Supper. Overnight Stay. Elevation change: uphill 980 m, downhill 290 m. Walking time: 6 hours.
3. DAY Osičina, Kuranik (1556 m), Motika (1473 m), Šibenik (1457 m), the mountain cottage "Slobodan Ravlić" on Lokva (1467 m), or The mountain cottage "Pod Sv.Jurom" (1594 m), supper, overnight stay. Elevation change: uphill 203 m, downhill 137 m. Walking time: 5 - 6 hours.
4. DAY Sv.Jure (1762 m), - the highest peak of mountain Biokovo, Babina Vrklja, Vošac (1421 m), Pržinovac, Kotišina - Natural heritage, Makarska. In the afternoon you an enjoy swimming in one of beaches in Makarska. Overnight stay. Elevation changes: uphill 168 m, downhill 1762 m. Walking time: 5 hours.
5. DAY Transfer to Živogošće. Onward on foot through Murava to the peak of Sutvid the highest peak southern part of Biokovo mountain. Return through Strno to Blato.Elevation change: uphill 1140 m, downhill 114O m. Walking time: 5 - 6 hours.
6. DAY Transfer to Baško Polje. Proceeding on foot through the village of Bast to Smokvina. Proceeding on foot through Veliki Zavod, Miletina Bora, the village of Baškovići, Veliko Brdo to Makarska. Elevation change: uphill 700 m, downhill 750 m. Walking time: 5 hours. Visiting institute "Planina i more", giving to tourists the badge with dr. fra Jure Radić on it
7. DAY Make your own choice. We recommend to visit: excursion to Islands of Brač and Hvar, Dubrovnik, rafting on the river of Cetina
8. DAY Return trip.
GUIDING: Trekking program is guided by the experienced climber – mountain rescuer, a member of the Mountain rescue team – Makarska station.
DIFFICULTY: The programme is organized on the middle rough terrain of the Biokovo massif, without special difficulties.
SPENDING THE NIGHT ON THE TERRAIN: is organizes in the mountain houses.
FOOD: The organizer is responsible for the food delivery and preparation.
EQUIPMENT: It is necessary to have: rucksack suitable shoes for long hiking on the rocky terrain, high socks, suitable clothes, reserved clothes, for changing, jacket, raincoat, cap, sunglasses and 2 L of drinks, and light sleeping bag.
PHYSICAL READINESS: It is necessary to have average climbing experience, as well as the average physical condition. Daily hiking 4-7 hours.
TERMS: Every Saturday from 01. April to 30. November
